Sri Lanka has become a favourite for surfers of every level. From the south coast to Arugam Bay, here's a quick guide to seasons, spots, and why the island keeps drawing wave-riders back.

Sri Lanka might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of world-class surfing, but over the past decade it has earned a solid reputation. Consistent waves, warm water, and a growing surf culture make it an ideal destination for beginners and experienced surfers alike.

Two Main Surf Seasons

Sri Lanka's surf calendar is split by geography and monsoon:

  • South & West Coast (Nov–Apr) – From Hikkaduwa down to Matara and beyond, the south and west coast get the most consistent swell during the winter season. This is when spots like Weligama, Mirissa, and Madiha come to life. Water is warm, and conditions are often suitable for learning and improving.
  • East Coast (May–Oct) – Arugam Bay is the star of the east. From around May to October, the bay and nearby breaks get reliable swell. The vibe is more backpacker-surf, with a busy high season and a strong surf community.

Best Spots for Beginners

If you're new to surfing, the south coast is your friend. Weligama Bay is famous for long, gentle waves and plenty of surf schools. Midigama and Madiha also offer forgiving conditions. Lessons and board hire are easy to find, and the water is warm enough that you rarely need more than a rash vest.

Intermediate & Advanced

Once you're comfortable on the board, you can explore reef and point breaks along the south coast or plan a trip to Arugam Bay for faster, more powerful waves. Spots like Rams and Whiskey Point (east) and Lazy Left (south) offer more challenge and reward.

Why Surf in Sri Lanka?

Beyond the waves, Sri Lanka is affordable, easy to travel around, and full of other activities—yoga, wildlife, culture, and food. Many surfers combine a surf focus with coliving or remote work, turning a short trip into a longer stay. Whether you're chasing your first green wave or looking for a winter surf base, Sri Lanka deserves a place on your list.
